This Thanksgiving, I finally got to decorate our new dining table in our Charlotte apartment, and let me tell you, it was everything. I was so excited to create a beautiful holiday tablescape on my Jonathan Adler dining table—and of course, I leaned into the non-traditional color palette with glam, cozy, and modern vibes.

I wanted a tablescape that felt fresh and unique, so I ditched the usual fall oranges and browns and opted for this non-traditional color palette of black, cream, mauve, magenta, and gold.

Combining pieces I already had with some fabulous finds from Anthropologie and Crate & Barrel, I created a table that had the glam factor I was looking for, and it turned out to be one of my favorite tablescapes ever!

Let’s breakdown about how it all came together + I have some tips to share to help you create a holiday tablescape you’ll love!

Tips for a Tablescape You’ll Love

Creating a stunning tablescape doesn’t have to be complicated! These tips will help you craft a setup that’s both beautiful and functional:

1. Choose a Color Palette You Love

Your color palette is the foundation of your tablescape. Start with that. I went for black, cream, mauve, magenta, and gold, blending modern and elegant tones. The key is to pick colors that complement your dining space and reflect your personal style, and of course, correspond with the season. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box—non-traditional palettes can make your table stand out!

2. Incorporate Textures for Depth

Texture brings your tablescape to life!

I mixed soft mauve linen napkins, sleek black abstract placemats, soft crochet cutlery holders, and glossy gold salad plates for visual interest. My centerpiece featured textured items like smooth glass vases, velvet trees, crystal Christmas trees, and natural winter greenery with soft floral to tie everything together.

Think smooth, shiny, matte, soft, and rough textures to keep the eye engaged, and for the table to feel inviting and not “cold”.

3. Include Natural, Seasonal Elements

A touch of nature adds warmth and freshness to your table. I used natural winter greenery and floral touches, which not only grounded the glam decor but also brought a soft, organic vibe to the table. Without the natural elements, the table would have felt unwelcoming and too harsh. Go for in-season greenery, like pine cones, eucalyptus or red berries in the winter, or tulips and baby’s breath in the spring. If you’re working with florals, choose one that is appropriate for the season in a color that complements your palette.

4. Keep the Centerpiece Functional

This is a biggie—what’s the point of a gorgeous centerpiece if it blocks your guests’ view? Keep your centerpiece low or slender to avoid obstructing conversation. I balanced low elements (mini stockings, vases, and greenery) with slender taper candles to add height without disrupting sightlines.

5. Mix Old and New Pieces

I love incorporating items I already own with new finds (because let’s be honest, decorating an entire table from scratch is not inexpensive). For this tablescape, I used white dinner plates, gold salad plates, and black placemats I had on hand. Then I added modern touches like Anthropologie’s gold-bottomed glasses and Crate & Barrel’s mauve napkins, which matched my velvet dining chairs perfectly.

6. Add Functional Glam

Crate & Barrel’s cream knit stockings for cutlery were a game-changer for me. Not only were they adorable, but they also kept my cutlery clean and eliminated the need to set them out traditionally. Look for small, functional details like these that make your tablescape chic and practical.

7. Play with Lighting

Lighting can make or break the mood. I used a mix of unscented taper and pillar candles for a warm, inviting glow. If you’re hosting an evening dinner, consider dimming your overhead lights to let the candles take center stage.

8. Personalize It

Adding small, personal touches makes your table unforgettable. Whether it’s handwritten name cards, a little trinket at each place setting, or even coordinating your decor with your dining room’s overall vibe (like my mauve napkins matching the dining chairs), these details show your personality and make guests feel extra special.

Why I Loved This Tablescape

This tablescape wasn’t just beautiful—it was practical and personal. The combination of modern decor, soft textures, and festive flair felt perfect, and I loved every second of designing this setup.

Whether you’re hosting a big holiday dinner or an intimate gathering, I hope these tips inspire you to create a tablescape that’s as gorgeous and unique as you are. Let me know if you try any of these ideas—I’d love to see your stunning setups!

Xo, Ashley

I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed creating the tablescape and photographing it. 😜
